There are twenty-two Vaars in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
Nine of these Vaars come with a distinctive traditional folk music tune (Dhuni).
These nine Vaars are to be sung by kirtanis in the appropriate Raags and Dhunis indicated in
Gurbani.
For example, Maanjh Kee Vaar is to be sung in Raag Maanjh accompanied by the Taal of ਮਲਕ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਤਥਾ
ਚੰਦ੍ਰਹੜਾ ਸੋਹੀਆ ਕੀ ਧੁਨੀ (Malak Mureed Tathaa Chandharaa Soheeaa kee Dhuni).
Another example - at the start of Asa Ki Vaar, it is written that the Vaar is to be sung in the tune
of ਟੁੰਡੇ ਅਸ ਰਾਜੈ ਕੀ ਧੁਨੀ (Tunday Asrajey Ki Dhuni).
There is a story behind each tune indicated for each of the nine Vaars. The stories behind the tunes
have been given in the kathas below.
